U2 was one of a few bands that took advantage of multimedia in a way that it would act as a tool to project their songs and their feelings and ideas to the audience and magnify the aura of this elements. ZOOtv has taken up a legendary status as the greatest rock concert ever staged by any band. The 90's was a time of analog video and the media as an unintentional addictive force to the world with the rise of television and the fall of Communism and "Color Revolutions" in many countries and alongside this, the CNN Gulf War coverage was one of the many influences of this tour. With that in mind, Willie Williams and the band strived to take all the ads, the media', the publicity, the politics and crunched them all up into a ball and threw it back at The Man and all the Multinational Corporations.
Because of the bad image the media has garnered, the media was parodied and satired heavily in this concert. Subliminal messages, mock transmission towers and Andy Warhol-esque video montages and stock video morphed and warped beyond recognition, flying trabants and intense lighting created an atmosphere of Information Overload in each of their weekly concerts.
This tour served as an inspiration to me and my Digital artworks. mashing up diffrent media together into some ugly monster that numbs the mind and the heart.
